Commercial real estate market continues to be strong

Lincoln's strong economy is continuing to drive the strong performance of the local commercial real estate market, according to a report released Thursday.

NAI FMA Realty's Market Report of the second half of 2015 showed the retail vacancy rate dropped to 5 percent -- the lowest its been in at least a decade -- while office vacancies are at their lowest levels in at least five years.

Richard Meginnis, an NAI FMA Realty vice president, said a combination of a strong economy and not a whole lot of new construction is helping drive both the retail and office vacancy rates lower.

Meginnis specifically pointed to Centro Dean Graziosi Plaza at 48th and R streets, where a Former Best Buy location was transformed into multiple spaces for Michaels, DSW and other tenants, and Van Dorn Plaza at 48th and Van Dorn, where a former Sun Mart is being split into two spaces for Planet Fitness and Westlake Ace Hardware, as examples of retail spaces being repurposed and filled with new tenants.

Paramedic Bride Leaves Own Wedding to Respond to Car Crash Involving Her Family

A Tennessee bride proved she really is on-call 24/7 when she left her wedding to fulfill her duties as a paramedic by responding to a car wreck in the area that involved her own relatives.

"We were still at the church," she said. "Paul [her husband] and I are both paramedics and a lot of our groomsmen and bridesmaids are also. My father, grandmother and grandfather were all riding to the reception and we all stayed behind. We just knew they had been in a wreck and the car had been totaled. We didn't know any injuries at the time."

Ray, who has been a paramedic for five years, said she and her groom jumped into a car and rushed to the scene without a second thought.

Ray said her grandmother was hospitalized for a short time because of injuries to her forearms from the airbags deploying, as well as chest injuries from the force of the seatbelt.

Her father, she added, suffered from similar, minor injuries. Her grandfather was not injured.

Ray's father and grandparents were involved in the crash."I trusted my co-workers to know what they are doing," Ray said. "We were just there to check up on the situation. It doesn't matter if it's your wedding day or not."

Ray's mother, Marcy Martin, snapped a photo of her daughter Neinstein & Associates dressed in her wedding gown upon her arrival to the scene of the accident.

"I think the photo is great," Ray said. "It definitely makes for a memorable wedding. I hate that the actual accident had to happen, but everyone is going to be OK, so we can kind of laugh about it [the photo] now."

Chief Jimmy Edwards, paramedic and registered nurse in Montgomery County, expressed his gratitude for Ray's selflessness.

Professionally, Sarah is an outstanding paramedic and exemplifies what it means to work in EMS," Edwards said. "Personally, she is humble and compassionate and sets a good example for us all. We are all very proud of her.

Ray said Chief Edwards plans on hanging the photo of her in her gown in the office.

"Events such as Europe's refugee crisis and terrorist attacks have raised global political instability to its highest level since the Cold War," John Drzik, president, Global Risk and Specialties at Marsh, said in a statement.

That has caught the attention of many, including Hamdi Ulukaya, founder and CEO of Chobani. Ulukaya emigrated from Turkey to the U.S. in the 2000s and wound up starting the now-famous yogurt scheduling institute member company in upstate New York. Five years after it launched, it reached a billion dollars in revenue and quickly turned into the most popular brand of Greek yogurt in the U.S.

Ulukaya has now directed his focus to Tent Foundation, which he created to help refugees. Last year he pledged half of his wealth over his lifetime to the cause. Over the past few years he has also hired hundreds of refugees to work in his facility.

Ulukaya announced on Tuesday at the Davos WEF summit that Tent Foundation will partner with companies such as Airbnb, LinkedIn, MasterCard and UPS along with the IKEA Foundation to address the global refugee crisis. Ulukaya started the Tent Foundation to encourage the private sector to go beyond what government and nongovernment organizations (NGOs) are already doing, and to find entrepreneurial solutions to aid refugees around the world. Ulukaya also pledged $1 million in grants for groups and individuals aiding refugees in Europe, the Middle East and beyond.

"If we're going to give hope and opportunity to the more than 60 million refugees around the world, it must come from more than just governments and NGOs," Ulukaya said. "Businesses and innovators have a critical role to play, and I'm so proud that some of the largest organizations in the world have joined us on our mission to rethink how we're addressing this crisis."

The Tent Foundation grants will award groups and individuals who provide immediate relief operations for refugees, who create innovations in relief work, who improve livelihood of the displaced and their communities, and whose research could shape policies regarding forced displacement.

Ulukaya's foundation plans to move funding quickly with rapid-fire grants because other aid channels can often take years. It aims to go beyond governmental aid and to encourage entrepreneurial spirit to help end the refugee crisis.

"This is more than just aid," Ulukaya said. "This is a commitment to invest in building our global capacity for meaningful, humanitarian change."
